Ian has over 25 years in the application of Electrical and
Instrumented Systems in the chemical and petro-chemical industry as
Manager Instrument & Electrical, with full responsible for design,
maintenance and engineering standards associated with
Instrumentation and Electrical systems at a 'COMAH top tier' and
'DSEAR 'facility.
Ian has been trained by ICI in HAZOP, Fault Tree, and Safety
Instrumented Design. Based on this and his hands-on experience he
developed company design & engineering practice manuals based on
the Shell, Dutch State Mines and ICI DEPs to provide the company
with a comprehensive set of I & E Design & Engineering standards
appropriate to a top tier COMAH site. He has brought these into
line with BS EN 61508 and BS IEC 61511 using as a reference Shell
DEP (32.80.10.10 Gen 10/2001: Classification and Implementation of
Instrumented Protective Function, and Management of Safety
Instrumented Systems) and ICI engineering standards)
He is currently assisting the two teams working for the UK HSE
to provide models of 'good practice' for new and 'legacy' SIS proof
testing and to provide a methodology for gap analysis of 'legacy' v
61508 requirements.
He is also a member of the SIPI 61508 pan-European 61508
role-out team a EU sponsored project.
Ian has several papers published and has recently given
presentations and courses on DSEAR and 61508.
