Safety Trip Systems already existed when the new standard came in.
The new standard for safety instrumented systems, IEC61508, is implemented in
the process sector as the IEC61511 standard. Where a safety trip system,
emergency shutdown system etc includes equipment that pre-dates the standards
the HSE calls them "Legacy systems". With the introduction of the IEC 61508 and
IEC 61511 standards throughout Europe, how will these standards affect the older
systems that are still in operation?
Do you have systems that comprise a mixture of pneumatic, electrical /
electronic / programmable devices?
Were they originally designed more as a method of protecting an asset rather
than people?
Have you made changes - plant modifications/additions etc. in the recent
past?
Were the necessary safety checks carried out and the changes fully
documented?
Are you planning to make any changes to these older systems?
Rowan House are offering in 2008 a 1 Day on site 'Free Health check of your
Legacy Safety Trip System'.
To arrange for a FREE Legacy Trip System Health check contact enquires@rowanhouse.co.uk.
