The new standard for safety instrumented systems, IEC61508, is implemented in the process sector as the IEC61511 standard. Where a safety trip system, emergency shutdown system etc includes equipment that pre-dates the standards the HSE calls them "Legacy systems". With the introduction of the IEC 61508 and IEC 61511 standards throughout Europe, how will these standards affect the older systems that are still in operation?
